Maple & Padauk Square Bowl
This is a square bowl I made for my sister-in-law's 39th birthday (hence
the underside inscription). The bowl is of quilted maple and the lid is from
padauk. There's a bead around the bowl opening that meshes with the lid.
Turning a square means you're turning in air part of the time and
hitting the wood part of the time, so the higher the speed you can turn, the
better. Biggest challenge is getting the square tips sanded. After sanding,
the edges get rounded, so I ran it through the table saw to square them off
again. The bowl is 7" square and about 1" deep. It was finished with several
coats of tung oil and then a rub of paste wax. The slight discoloration on the
base is minor spalting in the maple.
I need to find a better inscription method.
